OUR JOURNAL
The most recent season in 2023 commenced with participation from the Faculty of Political Economy at UEB in Vietnam, along with two returning ambassadors from the previous season, and a member from India. The opening session began with a question posed by a new participant from UniKL in Malaysia: “How does this program help me?”, providing an opportunity for all ambassadors and facilitators to share their experiences and journeys within the program.
To set expectations for the season, all attendees were invited to introduce themselves, explain what brought them to the program, and outline their expectations. Initially, the energy level was relatively low, but it surged when one participant, Diep Anh, boldly stated, “I want to learn how to Hack a Business.” This kind of spirit, courage, and enthusiasm is precisely what the program aims to cultivate among young people. The goal is to nurture a series of “hackers” who can employ innovative and unconventional approaches to address challenges, enhance processes, create new opportunities, and make a positive impact within the business world. These approaches involve creative problem-solving, thinking beyond conventional boundaries, and using unconventional methods to achieve desired outcomes.
The session also delved into the world’s oldest businesses, offering insights into essential human needs and prompting the question of what types of businesses will endure over the next 50 years. Various business models and a business diagram were brought into discussion, and participants were assigned homework.
The program is designed to challenge students to unlock their full potential and perform at their best. It emphasizes harnessing collective ideas and energy to the maximum extent. However, some attendees appeared present in body but not fully engaged, and this low level of engagement will necessitate additional efforts in the upcoming sessions to ensure that each participant cracks their shyness and comfort zone to reach their fullest potential.
The session on “Problems at Work” was conducted on a cool evening with 12 enthusiastic participants. Dinh Huong, the host, initiated the session with a thought-provoking question: “What pops up in your mind when thinking about hospitality?” This question ignited engagement in the chat box as participants shared their initial thoughts.
Discussion Highlights:
-
Industry overview: Dinh Huong provided an overview of the hospitality industry, delving into its definition and various categories. This laid the foundation for the discussion. Aiswarya M took the stage to share interesting facts and insights about the hospitality sector, shedding light on its importance and scope. The session moved on to a critical analysis of the hospitality industry, using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) framework. Dinh Huong divided the participants into four breakout rooms to facilitate discussions on each aspect of the SWOT analysis.
-
Feedback and Reflection: After the group discussions, participants reconvened to share the key points and insights from their respective rooms. Facilitators offered feedback and further insights to enrich the discussion. There were many examples brought into discussion: Samsung, Vinfast…
-
A women leader shared about her PROBLEMS AT WORK: The session took an unexpected turn when DAV79 presented a case study on Kiky’s business. Participants were intrigued by the detective mission: Why the revenue was increasing but money never came in?. This case study prompted profound contemplation.
-
The detective mission was left open to all participants – they were encouraged to post their thoughts on Padlet, fostering an interactive learning environment and indept analysis.
The “Problems at Work” session was both informative and thought-provoking. It explored various facets of the hospitality industry, encouraged critical thinking through SWOT analysis, and engaged participants in lively discussions. The story of Kiky’s business added an element of surprise and prompted participants to think deeply about real business dynamics.
The session came to a close after a valuable feedback session. It was a successful endeavor that left participants with new insights and perspectives on the problems at work, prepare themselves with real work settings.
